In accordance with a plan prepared by the Township’s water and sewer utility engineer, the township is proceeding with the construction of water system improvements in the area west of the Garden State Parkway. The additional facilities include three additional water supply wells, a 400,000-gallon water storage tank and a 4.4 million gallon per day water treatment plant. The improvements are necessary based on current and projected future demand on the township water system. The three new water supply wells have been completed on township-owned property off of Golfview Drive. In addition, construction has been completed on a new 400,000-gallon water storage tank located on township-owned property adjacent to the Ocean Acres Elementary School. A contract has been awarded extensive work has been completed to date on the construction of a new 4.4 million gallon per day water treatment plant. The current plan calls for the treatment plant to be completed by April 1, 2006. The township will be utilizing low interest financing from the NJDEP Environmental Infrastructure Trust Fund (NJEIT) program for construction of the treatment plant. Following the completion of the Ocean Acres Water Treatment Plant, the next phase of our water supply improvements will include the installation of water transmission lines in Ocean Acres. A six year phasing schedule beginning in 2006 has been established for the transmission line project. A separate mailing detailing the water transmission line project was sent to Ocean Acres residents in August of 2005. In addition a copy of the newsletter and a map of the phasing plan have been posted on our website at www.twp.stafford.nj.us. Once all of these water system improvements have been completed the township may be seeking to eliminate the water supply wells in the Beach Haven West area based on the age of those wells and the shallower depth of the wells which raises concerns about salt-water intrusion. Based on the NJDEP criteria and regulations it will take approximately 6 to 8 years to complete all of the facets of this project even though some improvements as noted above will be completed in phases before that time.
