Internet Safe Exchange Zone
Stafford Township Police Chief Thomas Dellane announced today that the department has established an “Internet Safe Exchange Zone” for residents buying or selling items online. “The shopping trends of most Americans have changed dramatically over the past few years. Many of our residents utilize websites like eBay, Craigslist, and other buy and sell websites to make internet transactions due to the ease and convenience of these transactions, but it also has created new opportunities for criminals. In the past few years, the police department has investigated several instances where residents were defrauded due to online sales” Chief Dellane said.
“Problems arise when people have to pick a location to conduct the exchange. Meeting someone at your home or in an unfamiliar area can be problematic and potentially expose people to being victimized. We recommend meeting in a safe, neutral location” Dellane said.
"Most people agree to meet in a busy shopping center parking lot, can complete," said Community Policing Officer Chris Fritz. "Having made several internet transactions myself, it can be a little worrisome to exchange cash in an uncontrolled or unmonitored environment.”
The Stafford Township Police Department has created an Internet Safe Exchange Zone where you can complete internet sales transactions safely in person. Two parking spaces in a well-lit area at the Stafford Municipal Complex located at 260 E Bay Ave., Manahawkin NJ 08050 have been marked and designated.
The Internet Safe Exchange Zone is under 24-hour video surveillance. The area is clearly marked with signage and painted spaces and is located on the east side of the municipal building. Look for the signs that say “Reserved Parking-Internet Commerce Safe Zone”. There is a 15-minute parking limit
