Stafford Twp. - On September 30, 2025 at approximately 1:35 AM, a motor vehicle collision took place on State Highway 72 eastbound at the intersection of Nautilus Drive in Manahawkin. Stafford Police patrol units were called to the traffic signal of Mermaid Drive and Route 72 for a male possibly asleep at the wheel. While in route to the area, patrol units witnessed an over-turned pickup truck, resembling the original caller's description, on Route 72 eastbound at Nautilus Drive. The silver 2005 Ford Ranger, driven by a 17 year old male, appeared to have collided with a utility pole then rolled over where it came to rest upside down. The driver was entrapped in the vehicle and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His family has been notified. Stafford Township Volunteer Fire and EMS, Hackensack Meridian Medics, and Ocean County Sheriff's Department assisted with the accident.
The Stafford Township Police Department extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the teenage driver during this painful time.
NJDOT and the utility companies are currently on scene working to repair the damaged infrastructure. The intersection has been temporarily modified to allow traffic to continue to flow; however, it is recommended to take an alternate route if possible.
